Номер, присвоенный конкретному владельцу денежной карточки (cash card), кредитной карточки (credit card) или многоцелевой карточки (multifunctional card) и используемый для его идентификации терминалами банкоматов (automated teller machines) и систем электронных платежей (electronic funds transfer). Номер присваивается владельцу карточки тайно и наносится на нее таким образом, что в случае похищения карточки вор не сможет ею воспользоваться. Каждый владелец карточки имеет свой уникальный номер. Банки не оплачивают “фантомные изъятия” со счетов (phantom withdrawals), если доказано, что личный идентификационный номер был известен кому-то, помимо клиента, которому он был присвоен.
